Fingerprint readers or Facial readers – Which is better for you?

Fingerprint Readers or Facial Readers for Access Control??

The quality of the solutions have improved tremendously, which make it one of the most critical decisions for any business to take regarding their access-control and time & attendance.

So, you’ve decided to get a solution for your business and premises, but should you get a fingerprint reader or facial reader for access-control at your business? which is more cost-effective, secure, easy to use and better in the long run?

Why Biometrics?

Access Cards and Keypads was where the market was in the 1990’s and the first part of the 21st century, but overtime, challenges and risks to these solutions have been identified, namely

  • Cards can be lost, stolen or given to other employees
  • Codes for Keypads can be forgotten and are time consuming to keep reprogramming
  • Cards are an additional regular expense for every new employee or lost card

Biometrics devices, like facial and fingerprint readers, overcome all these challenges, as your biometrics are always with you, and modern devices can deal with fake fingerprints or photographs of faces (spoofing)

So, how does one select the right fingerprint reader or facial reader for your business and access-control?

Employees & Enviroment

Are they white-collar or blue-collar? are the workers carrying boxes around so they don’t have a hand free?

An example at Blake Consultants was one of our customers was a adhesive (glue) manufacturing company – with the employees having resin on their fingers and hands, fingerprint readers would not work suitably, so we offered them a facial reader solution

Fingerprint readers are generally faster than facial readers (0.5 seconds vs 1+ seconds) for a verification, so in large scale environments, with for example, hundreds of staff going through a turnstile, a fingerprint reader would be better and faster.

Most facial readers, using a camera and lens, do not want direct sunlight or bright light shining into the lens, so in some outdoor environments, a IP65 waterproof fingerprint reader would be better.

Both these technologies, fingerprint and facial biometric devices, utilize the benefits of biometrics to authorize, authenticate and identify. Contact Blake Consultants today on info@blakeconsultants.co.za and help us guide you and your business today
